ANTHOLOGY ADDS A SUPERSTAR TO THEIR ALREADY STELLAR LINEUP

Chef Todd Allison Joins the San Diego Supper Club as Executive Chef

San Diego, CA - An elite Los Angeles chef whose skills and masterpieces in the kitchen have been described as having “marvelous flavor,” “relit the kitchen fire”‘ and a “creative menu” is on the move to San Diego’s Anthology.

Chef Todd Allison will join Anthology’s line-up as Executive Chef on July 19. The culinary veteran already has some major plans for the fine dining restaurant known for their unique atmosphere that blends top quality food with an intimate music and entertainment venue.

“I am about to test San Diego’s palate,” said Chef Allison. “I want to change the whole menu. I’m starting to plan and I’ll see what I can get away with.”

Mystery doesn’t surround everything on the future menu though. Chef Allison will definitely wow Anthology diners with his signature Cranberry-Pistachio Pesto and unusual Harissa spice, which is a chili paste made from the North African Piri Piri pepper that delivers a pleasant heat on the end of dishes. He also plans to incorporate his favorite fish, Loup de Mer, which he says translates to ‘Wolf of the Sea’, a perfect description.

“I don’t like getting stuck with a signature dish,” Chef Allison said. “I want to have multi-use spices and pastes that you can use on a wide range of things. I’ve used harissa on chicken sandwiches and cheese plates and fish dishes. It goes with everything.”

Chef Allison plans to shake things up in not just in the kitchen but at the bar too. At his former restaurant, Checkers Hilton, he experimented with truffle-infused rum and simple syrups mixed with peppers. Chef Allison is bringing that same enthusiasm to cocktails so diners’ taste buds are thrilled and enamored with not only with his innovative dishes but with the perfect, cocktail compliment.

Chef Allison will continue the cuisine standards of Anthology, especially in regards to the restaurant’s sustainable, market-driven food focus and campaign to support local farmers and fishermen.
With music in his roots, Chef Allison was immediately drawn to Anthology. From an early age, he fell in love with playing instruments - the piano, drums and guitar. That passion is still there, and now Anthology can help fulfill that musical inclination.

This award-winning California chef isn’t new to the San Diego scene. His childhood was spent on the beaches and back roads of Coronado Island where he lived with his parents and two siblings, a younger sister and older brother.

He moved to Scottsdale to pursue his education at the Scottsdale Culinary Le Cordon Bleu. While attending school, he worked as Tournant Chef at Mary Elaine’s at The Phonecian Resort and Spa where he won multiple honors including, the Mobile 5-Star, Triple A 5-Diamond and the Grand Wine Spectator awards. Chef Allison took his position of leadership as Sous Chef at Aqua at St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point. Two years later, he moved to Laguna Beach to work as Chef de Cuisine at Bollinger’s before his latest gig as Executive Chef at Checkers.

Happy Holidays from the Entire Anthology Family

Monday, December 21, 2009 11:03

This holiday season we want to take a moment to wish everyone a happy holiday. Both a time of joy and celebration it’s also a time of reflection. We know this has been truly a challenging year for most of us and we hope we have been able to add light to your heart and spirit with great music and food.

In ‘09, Anthology expanded into broader genres. Had legends grace our stage. Had dancing in the aisles. In the midst of the recession Fresh Vibe Tuesdays was created featuring delicious homestyle appetizers and entrees ranging from $3-$15. We also launched our popular VTix, a value ticket program, $10 for open seating on the Upper Level, no minimums, just great music.

In the new year we’ll continue to bring in exciting artists and mixed genres – and explore musical boundaries. Our food will continue to be creative, delicious and at price points we can all appreciate. We also encourage you to bring your children so they can experience the gift of live music.

You have made our year special and we wish you a 2010 filled with a recovering economy, personal growth opportunities, great live music, peace and good health.

Most of all, we thank you for supporting Anthology and hope to see you often in the new year.

Luscious Noise - An Evening of Live Classical Music, Film and Dance

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 9:36

CHANGING THE WORLD OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
Why Classical Musicians Are Making Some Noise.

San Diego, CA (October 30, 2009) — Music Director/Conductor John Stubbs of California Ballet has created an extraordinary multi-media performance experience where live classical music, dance, and film converge for one special evening in San Diego’s most exciting music and dining venue — Anthology supper club in Little Italy. Featured artists’ include members of the San Diego Symphony and a rare appearance by Prima Ballerina Denise Dabrowski who will perform a signature solo of “The Dying Swan” made famous by the legendary Anna Pavlova.

Luscious Noise is a novel approach to making live classical music performance more accessible to general audiences. By bringing the music experience directly to the people in an outlet that appeals to a broad demographic, patrons will soon re-discover how versatile classical music can be. Historically, classical music conjures a general perception that the genre predominantly caters to the mature aristocratic society. This connotation has long deterred younger audiences and those with average level incomes from experiencing classical music through live performance. To help dispel this notion, Conductor John Stubbs will proudly present Luscious Noise on Sunday, November 22.

“Whenever I see pop groups perform, I always wish I could see that same level of fun for classical performances,” says Stubbs. When he discovered Anthology, Stubbs realized he stumbled upon something significant. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do here, but I knew I had to do something. The built-in multi-media capabilities made me very interested in wanting to perform there.”

During the developmental stage of his production concept, Stubbs learned of other musicians abroad that have taken similar measures to create opportunities for younger audiences to experience live classical music in settings that are less intimidating than concert halls — namely pubs and clubs.

Since 2001, “Classical Club Nights” have been on the rise in Berlin and London. These monthly events have been overwhelmingly popular for several reasons: they are reasonably priced, there’s no pressure about how to dress or when to clap, and it’s perfectly acceptable if patrons are unfamiliar with the music.

People can relax, sip their drinks, and continue their conversations while the performance is in progress. With the premiere of Luscious Noise at Anthology, Stubbs aims to please by introducing local audiences to something quite new.

Luscious Noise music selections will include:
• Grieg’s Holberg Suite
• Mozart Divertimento
• Dvo?ák Suite
• Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade”
• “Romanze” by Sibelius

Luscious Noise visual excerpts will include:
• The film noir classic “The Third Man”
• Natalie Dessay in “Tales of Hoffman”
• Kurt Weill’s “Street Scene”
• Jiri Kylian’s choreographic works to the music of Mozart
• Carlos Kleiber conducting Beethoven’s “7th Symphony”

SAN DIEGO, September 14…..Local music has never sounded so good thanks to a new collaboration between Anthology and KPRI (102.1).

Starting October 9, the 10 p.m. sets on Friday nights will be dedicated to performances by San Diego’s emerging local artists. It’s sure to be the hottest ticket in town.

Can’t make it? Don’t worry! KPRI is broadcasting the shows live.

The first episode of “KPRI Homegrown Friday’s Live At Anthology” will feature Endoxi, Nova and Tori Roze and Anthology co-owner Marsha Berkson believes the collaboration is a sign that the local music scene is alive and thriving.

“Since Anthology opened two years ago, it has become THE place to play for local musicians,” Berkson said. “This allows many great San Diegan musicians to play in a world class club in front of enthusiastic music fans. KPRI has the most eclectic playlist of any commercial radio station in San Diego, and the local bands that play here are sure to reflect that diversity as well.”

It’s truly a sound investment in the community by both parties, especially where sound is concerned according to Homegrown Friday host Cathryn Beeks.

“Anthology has the best sound system in San Diego, if not California, and, as a result, these great local bands will sound great – both in the club and on the radio.”

The first show is October 9, with other shows following on October 23 and 30 as well as November 6 and 27. Then, starting in January, “Homegrown Friday” will be a weekly affair.”

Anthology’s Chef Jazzes Up Tuesday Night Menu

Sunday, August 23, 2009 20:38

Tuesday nights at Anthology are already a hot ticket for jazz fans thanks to the acclaimed Anthology House Band – and now the menu is getting jazzed up as well.

In keeping with the “jazzy music,” Chef Eric Bauer is using Tuesday nights as his chance to improvise with the menu.”

“The great jazz musicians often improvise upon classic melodies and I want to do the same with classic American cuisine,” Bauer said.

For instance, a recent menu included Bauer’s versions of crispy chicken drumsticks flavored with lemon and thyme; macaroni and cheese mixed with braised pork shoulder and a French toast dessert that included frosted flakes, fresh peaches and white chocolate.

“Why should the musicians have all the fun?” Bauer said. “Just like John Coltrane might improvise over a classic melody, it’s fun putting my own spin on classic comfort foods.”

The bar snacks on Tuesday start at $3 and the entrees start at $12. In addition, the drink prices start at $4 with different wines featured each week. Considering that the cover charge for the Anthology House Band – which includes some of San Diego’s finest musicians – is only $5, you have the makings of a great meal with great music at a great price.

Anthology is located at 1337 India Street in San Diego. For more information, go to www.anthologysd.com

Branford Marsalis making his first San Diego appearances since 1999

Weep for joy
Branford Marsalis’ march to immortality a mix of emotions
By George Varga
March 26, 2009

Since becoming an internationally acclaimed young lion of jazz in the 1980s, Branford Marsalis has worked tirelessly to master his instrument. Today, the multiple Grammy Award-winning saxophonist wants to master the music itself.

“One of the things I noticed as I hit my 30s is that, too often, we don’t differentiate between musicians and instrumentalists,” he said.

“And I’ve noticed that, too often, superior technique and virtuosity is misconstrued as musicianship, which it isn’t. It’s just superb technique. Because I spent so much time trying to achieve it, and failing, I’ve started to understand the power of sound and how you can use sound to create emotion. That’s the greatest challenge – and asset – an instrumental musician can have.”

Marsalis performs here with his quartet Tuesday and Wednesday at downtown’s all-ages Anthology, where he’ll be making his first San Diego appearance since 1999…..

SMOKIN’ JOE KUBEK & BNOIS KING TO PERFORM AT ANTHOLOGY IN SAN DIEGO!

Monday, March 2, 2009 16:08

“Potent, undiluted 100-proof Texas blues honed to a razor’s edge.”
-GuitarOne

The red-hot rockin’ Texas blues band Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King, touring in
support of their debut Alligator CD, BLOOD BROTHERS, will perform in San Diego on
March 4, 2009. Kubek’s raucous roadhouse fretwork is expertly complimented by the
equally fiery guitar and soulful vocals of Bnois King. With nearly 20 years together
and literally thousands of live performances under their collective belt, the two
create a one-two punch of raw, tough, Lone Star blues-rock. Concert information is
as follows:

Wednesday, March 4th
Anthology
1337 India St.
San Diego, CA
619.595.0300
www.anthologysd.com
7:30 p.m.
$13 - $27

*Check website for detailed ticket information

BLOOD BROTHERS, produced by Kubek and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, features 14
high-energy blues songs (13 originals) filled with Kubek’s larger-than-life fretwork
and King’s smoky vocals and economical, tasty guitar playing. Recorded with Kubek
and King’s road-honed band, the album captures all of their legendary live energy
and highlights the seemingly telepathic interplay between the musicians.

Kubek was born in Grove City, PA in 1956 but grew up in Irving, TX. He was leading
his own bands and gigging all around Dallas clubs when he was only 14. Bowled over
by the blues after first hearing Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, Kubek soon discovered
the music of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and other early masters. By the time he was
19, he was backing many famous players in the area, including legend Freddie King.

Kubek worked with R&B singer Al “TNT” Braggs and made a host of friends, including
Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan (with whom Kubek became close), B.B. King and many
other blues icons. In 1989, Kubek met guitarist/vocalist Bnois King at a Monday
night Dallas jam session. The two became fast friends, and melded their seemingly
divergent styles - Kubek a rocking and fierce picker and slider, King a
jazz-inflected chorder (who could also solo with flaming electricity) - into one of
the most potent guitar combinations the Southwest had ever produced.

King was born in Delhi, LA in 1943. He was inspired to play guitar by his high
school music teacher. Before long, Bnois was playing blues cover songs with a local
band. On his own, he traveled through Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado, finding local
bands to gig with and also performing with carnival tent show combos. King made his
way to Dallas in 1979, gigging with jazz bands until he hooked up with Kubek 10
years later.

Calling themselves The Smokin’ Joe Kubek Band Featuring Bnois King, they signed with
Bullseye Blues and released their debut CD, Stepping Out Texas Style, in 1991. The
band immediately grew out of Texas and began touring nationally. After a successful
series of Bullseye releases, they joined Blind Pig Records in 2003. As their
popularity continued to build on the strength of their music and the energy of their
live shows, Kubek and King started playing over 150 dates per year all across the
United States, Canada and Europe.

With BLOOD BROTHERS and a massive tour planned, the band will gig from coast to
coast, bringing their no-holds-barred brand of soul-charged Texas rockin’ blues to
old fans and newcomers night after night.

WORLD RENOWNED BRANFORD MARSALIS QUARTET RELEASES METAMORPHOSEN ON MARSALIS MUSIC MARCH 17TH
** US TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED BELOW**

(New York, NY—January 22, 2009) After releasing the “dynamic” and “passionate” (Jazz Times) Braggtown in 2006, the multiple Grammy-nominated Branford Marsalis Quartet toured worldwide for two years before returning to the recording studio. The result, a nine track masterpiece, is one of the band’s strongest and most broadly appealing albums to date. Metamorphosen is scheduled to be released on the saxophonist’s Marsalis Music label March 17, 2009.

The album title, which is German for “metamorphoses,” was chosen to emphasize the growth and development of the quartet and each individual member. “We’ve all been practicing,” Marsalis comments, “and you can hear it in the development of the music and in our sound.” Metamorphosen shows the band’s collective bond of deep friendship, respect and musicianship. With more than ten years together under their belt, the saxophonist’s acclaimed ensemble (featuring pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts) pushes the envelope even farther with intense focus, subtlety and excitement.

Recorded and produced by Branford at the Hayti Center in his hometown Durham, NC, Metamorphosen features original compositions by each member of the quartet as well as its unique take on Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-a-ning”. Among the standout tracks are “Samo ©,” Watts’ dedication to the late visual artist Jean-Michel Basquiat; the unaccompanied bass feature “And Then, He Was Gone,” in which Revis contemplates his son growing up; and Calderazzo’s moving ballads “The Blossom of Parting” and “The Last Goodbye.” Marsalis’ contribution, “Jabberwocky,” is a challenging 19-bar form that features his first recording on alto saxophone in over two decades.

Metamorphosen is perhaps the Branford Marsalis Quartet’s most accessible album for music lovers of all genres. “We try to do everything,” Marsalis explains. “We run the gamut, and are prepared to play anything at any time. These are incredible musicians who are really good at playing in a variety of styles.” Fans will see the “metamorphoses” first hand as the Branford Marsalis Quartet performs in selected cities across the U.S. in support of the new album, beginning in March 19th at the Jazz Alley in Seattle.

Intrepid Artists congratulates Kenny Neal on winning BluesWax Album of the Year!

Thursday, February 5, 2009 11:59

The nominating process created the final ballot of:
Full Tilt - Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials
It’s Hot In Here - EG Kight
Let Life Flow - Kenny Neal
Maestro - Taj Mahal
Peace, Love & BBQ - Marcia Ball

These were all great nominations and we loved every one of them! In the final voting, again with record returns, you selected Kenny Neal’s Let Life Flow as BluesWax Album of the Year 2008. The win is the first for Neal in the BluesWax awards.

Here is a reprise of the Let Life Flow review that ran in BluesWax (BluesWax Rating: 9)

A Magnanimous Return, (06/25/08)

During an eleven-month period beginning in 2004 Kenny Neal lost his father, Raful Neal Jr.; a brother Ronnie; and his sister Jackie. Shortly thereafter Kenny fought an 18-month battle with Hepatitis C. This is Kenny’s comeback album and his first recording since 2004.

I last saw Raful Neal Jr. at the 2000 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Onstage with Raful, was his young grandson. The Neals have always been a musical family and as the oldest son Kenny may now be considered its patriarch. Musically the influence of his father can be heard throughout this recording.

The album opens with several tunes written by Kenny. On the title track, he sings, “Life is so unpredictable, that’s the way it is/Gets a little hard to bear sometimes/Things out of nowhere to blow your mind/One thing I know for sure/You got to let life flow.” On the next track Neal states, “Every time I turn around the Blues is right there/I take a deep breath the Blues is in the air/Said the Blues, please leave me alone/I think you oughta go back to your trouble at home/Blues, Blues, Blues, leave me alone.” Joe Campbell’s trumpet and the saxophone of LeRoy Harper provide great horn arrangements on these two songs (”Let Life Flow” and Leave Me Alone”).

Lucky Peterson’s organ and the horns of Alfonso Guillory and Kenny Neal Jr. make Larry Duane Addison’s “You’ve Got to Hurt Before You Heal” the perfect vehicle for Neal to express his emotion. Neal’s own “Louisiana Stew” signifies that the healing is over.

Neal pays tribute to his dad by including two songs written by him. “Starlight Diamond” features Kenny’s harmonica. On “Bleeding Heart” he takes a passionate guitar solo. “Broken Dreams” was co-written by Neal and Rebecca LeMesnager and on it Neal takes a jazzier guitar solo. The rhythm section of Darnell Neal (bass) and Bryan Morris (drums) do a great job throughout.

Neal also covers “Another Man’s Cologne,” originally recorded by Little Jimmy King and The Memphis Soul Survivors. Also covered are Ivory Joe Hunter’s “Since I Met You Baby” and Willie Dixon’s “It Don’t Make Sense, You Can’t Make Peace.”

Kenny Neal gives us his fourth original on “Fly Away” as he sings “to prepare for eternity, we got to pray/Cause one day will come, we got to fly away.” Kenny Neal possesses a rare spirituality and it is reflected on this magnanimous return.

Richard Ludmerer is a contributing editor at BluesWax

The staff of BluesWax congratulates Kenny Neal for winning the BluesWax Album of the Year Award! And we thank the thousands of you who participated in this year’s nominating and voting process. You have spoken!

Duo features vocals of Jon Foreman, Switchfoot frontman and bluegrass stylings of Sean Watkins, Nickel Creek guitarist

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., Dec. 12 – Fiction Family, a collaboration between Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman and Nickel Creek guitarist Sean Watkins, will share their indie rock and acoustic sound with listeners during an intimate, one-of-a-kind live music experience at Anthology on Fri., Feb. 6.

Technically, Foreman and Watkins met 12 years ago, in the parking lot of the Off Shore Surf Shop in Carlsbad—both had emerged from the water, and a mutual friend introduced the two. But it wasn’t until much later, backstage at San Diego’s Street Scene music festival, where Switchfoot and Nickel Creek were performing one after the other, that the two hit it off and decided to record a song together.

What began as a pet project turned into something more once the two began playing together: an album whose organic, spontaneous genesis can be felt in its authentic, free-form songs. The resulting self-titled album will be released this month.

Fiction Family released their first single “When She’s Near” for free download on their website.

Al Di Meola Brings the “World” On Tour To Anthology On February 3

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 19:51
Posted in category Past Shows, Press Releases

Virtuoso guitarist hitting the road with World Sinfonia

Virtuoso guitarist Al Di Meola will be performing at Anthology, February 3 as part of his national tour and new album release with his new project, Al Di Meola and World Sinfonia. Joining a handpicked group of master musicians for both the tour and album, Di Meola makes a surprising turn into the romantic, producing a collection of moving tango-flavored melodies. Their work is on display on ‘La Melodia Live In Milano,’ available in America for the first time and releases on January 8, 2009, just days before the tour starts. The album features two songs by tango master Astor Piazzolla, for whom Di Meola admits he has been “carrying a torch” his entire career, as well as one each from Ennio Morricone and Andrea Parodi, and four by Di Meola himself.

This shift in tone is perfectly natural for Di Meola. “Although the tango developed in Argentina, it was born in the region of Italy where my parents are from, Napoli,” he explains. “This music connects to my roots. As long as I’m playing music, it will be part of my repertoire.” No wonder, then, that World Sinfonia’s music sounds so effortless: it’s in his blood.

As a member of groundbreaking jazz-fusion group Return to Forever starting in the 1970s, and in his solo work since, Di Meola earned a reputation for being technically brilliant with unbelievable chops. For the past several years, however, he has been spent as much time composing for chamber orchestras in Europe as creating blazing guitar solos. With World Sinfonia, Di Meola moves his audience with the range of emotions in his music, rather than simply blowing them away with his technique.

He has contributed to nine films (including At Home At The End Of The World and Through The Fire) and composed original music for New York City’s Public Theatre and Lincoln Center.

In addition to writing the music for the Broadway musical hit Spring Awakening, Grammy nominated singer–songwriter Duncan Sheik is collaborating with Playwright Steven Sater on The Nightingale, a musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen classic that premiered during the 26th annual O’Neill Music Theater Conference. Sheik has composed original music for the Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night and for The Golden Rooms of Nero, which opened at the Magic Theater in San Francisco earlier this year. His self-titled debut album on Atlantic Records, was an enormous popular and critical success and spent 30 weeks on the Billboard 200. Other albums include Humming, Daylight, Phantom Moon (Nonesuch Records) with lyrics by Steven Sater and his latest, White Limousine (Rounder Records), Duncan’s songs have appeared in many Film Soundtracks including Great Expectations, The Saint, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Three to Tango, What a Girl Wants, Transamerica and Amazing Grace (a documentary about the late Jeff Buckley). Sheik also composed and produced the original score for the feature film A Home at the End of the World, directed by Michael Mayer and starring Colin Farrell and recently finished scoring Mary Stuart Masterson’s directorial debut, The Cake Eaters.
