Weep for joy
Branford Marsalis’ march to immortality a mix of emotions
By George Varga
March 26, 2009

Since becoming an internationally acclaimed young lion of jazz in the 1980s, Branford Marsalis has worked tirelessly to master his instrument. Today, the multiple Grammy Award-winning saxophonist wants to master the music itself.

“One of the things I noticed as I hit my 30s is that, too often, we don’t differentiate between musicians and instrumentalists,” he said.

“And I’ve noticed that, too often, superior technique and virtuosity is misconstrued as musicianship, which it isn’t. It’s just superb technique. Because I spent so much time trying to achieve it, and failing, I’ve started to understand the power of sound and how you can use sound to create emotion. That’s the greatest challenge – and asset – an instrumental musician can have.”

Marsalis performs here with his quartet Tuesday and Wednesday at downtown’s all-ages Anthology, where he’ll be making his first San Diego appearance since 1999…..

EXCLUSIVE LEGENDARY BLUE NOTE RECORDS 70TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR FEATURES ALL-STAR SEPTET AT ANTHOLOGY JAN 27

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 17:31

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Blue Note legacy, an all-star band featuring some of the finest jazz musicians today will travel the world throughout 2009 with one of their first stops at Anthology in San Diego.

They will perform two shows of the best of Blue Note – “What was, is and will be” – on Tuesday,
January 27, 2009 at 7:30 and 9:30 pm. A new CD is to be released in conjunction with the commencement of the tour in January 2009.

ALL-STAR SEPTET FEATURES MUSICAL DIRECTOR BILL CHARLAP WITH NICHOLAS PAYTON, RAVI COLTRANE, STEVE WILSON, PETER BERNSTEIN, PETER WASHINGTON AND LEWIS NASH

Blue Note’s catalog of music features an impressive array of legendary performances and a core list of “must-have” releases that indelibly marked the history of jazz.
Charlap says, “The music that Blue Note recorded is so vast and historically important that there was no way we could be comprehensive in covering the contributions of so many major musicians. We chose to record compositions that would honor the label and its key players, whittling it down to eight of our favorites from Blue Note’s wide-ranging and extensive catalog.” Charlap hails the wisdom of Blue Note founder Alfred Lion, who launched the label in 1939, for “creating a forum for composers to write music. He trusted them to go ahead and do what they do best.”

“The Blue Note 7 is a true collaboration, an all-star band comprised of the next generation of major players, all leaders in their own right,” says Bruce Lundvall, President of Blue Note Records, who is also celebrating 25 years since he relaunched the label in 1984 after a hiatus. “They are also the A-list of accomplished arrangers and composers, steeped in the Blue Note tradition, re-imagining this time-honored repertoire in a fresh way.”

Charlap notes that each tune on Mosaic is arranged by a band member with the exception of two tracks arranged by pianist Renee Rosnes: McCoy Tyner’s “Search for Peace” and Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance.” Other tracks include Cedar Walton’s “Mosaic,” written for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and arranged by Nash; Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge,” arranged by Payton; Bobby Hutcherson’s “Little B’s Poem” and Thelonious Monk’s “Criss Cross,” both arranged by Wilson; Duke Pearson’s “Idle Moments,” written for guitarist Grant Green and arranged by Bernstein; and Horace Silver’s “The Outlaw,” arranged by Charlap.

Charlap points out that song choice was determined by the band’s desire to cover diverse tunes with different moods and arranging approaches. “Although each player is a leader in his own right, it’s the chemistry between these musicians that makes the band. We’re relatively young guys who have a lot of experience collectively, and we’ve had the opportunity to perform with many of the major Blue Note artists.”

Charlap salutes the work of Melnick and Jack Randall, a booking agent at Ted Kurland Associates, for coming up with the concept. He says, “This is an unusual example of an intelligent promotional idea with a very artistic result.” Melnick credits Randall for giving the project its jump-start. “Jack approached me and together we made our list of possible players,” he says. “Then we went to Blue Note, and everyone there loved the idea.” As for promoters who have booked the show, he says, “They’re happy with presenting the Blue Note songbook with all new arrangements performed by a great band that understands and respects jazz history. This will be a true celebration of Blue Note.”

More arrangements of songs from the Blue Note library will be created for The Blue Note 7 tour, which begins on January 7 in Yakima, Washington, and continues with concerts at universities and concert halls in 50 cities across North America.

SPYRO GYRA RINGS IN THE HOLIDAY SEASON AT ANTHOLOGY DEC. 16 & 17

Friday, November 21, 2008 17:01

THE INFLUENTIAL, GRAMMY-NOMINATED JAZZ-FUSION BAND TO PERFORM A SPECIAL HOLIDAY SHOW – “A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS”

SAN DIEGO, CALIF – Oct. 31 – Jazz-fusion masters Spyro Gyra will treat listeners to their highly influential sound at Anthology for two special holiday shows, “A Night Before Christmas” on Dec. 16 and 17.

As the seasons change and the end of the year draws near, even the most forward thinking and cutting-edge artists take a nostalgic moment to count their blessings.

Spyro Gyra has spent more than three decades pushing the boundaries and definitions of jazz beyond the commonly accepted parameters. In so doing, they continue to forge an edgy, enduring sound that incorporates some of the best elements of jazz and merges them with R&B, pop, Latin and various other styles.

But it isn’t always about breaking new ground. All five of these talented innovators – saxophonist Jay Beckenstein, pianist Tom Schuman, guitarist Julio Fernandez, bassist Scott Ambush and drummer Bonny B – agree that there’s a time and a place for reconnecting with tradition and celebrating the fundamental values at the core of their music and their lives.

This year, Spyro Gyra celebrates the holiday season with two holiday performances at Anthology inspired by their new CD: A Night Before Christmas, a collection of music that captures the yuletide spirit with a decidedly traditional jazz vibe.

“We’ve always had a yearning to do a record that was kind of a straightahead record – or at least something closer to a straightahead record than what we normally do,” says Beckenstein. “But it’s always been very difficult to make that work in the context of what we do on most of our records. But a Christmas record was sort of an opportunity to really go someplace a little more subtle, a little more acoustic and more traditional.”

Beckenstein brings his own perspective to the project. “Christmas has always been a huge part of my life,” he says. “There’s so much about it that’s universal, separate and apart from the religious aspects. It’s a celebration of all the things that are good and redeeming about humanity – compassion, hope, generosity, forgiveness, renewal, family, all those things.”

The traditional “O Tannenbaum” opens the set with an improvisational vibe. “It was set up as kind of a jam, and it went to some nice places,” says Beckenstein. “It sounds sort of contemporary, without really losing the acoustic feel of the song.”

If Christmas is about tradition, then Spyro Gyra has tied both together in a festive package. “There’s something about traditional jazz that harkens back to my childhood,” says Beckenstein. “On top of that, I have many nostalgic memories of Christmas. The holiday, and this kind of music, have created some of the fondest memories of my youth. These connections make this a very heartfelt record for me and for everyone in the band.”

Put another log on the fire. A Night Before Christmas might well be the best musical moment of this holiday season.

ABOUT SPYRO GYRA

Spyro Gyra’s jazz-fusion sound originated in the mid-1970s in Buffalo, New York. The band is one of the most prolific and commercially successful in the genre, with more than 25 albums and 10 million copies sold. Hit singles include “Shaker Song” and “Morning Dance,” which has enjoyed heavy rotation on popular music radio stations.

Their music has been influential in the development of smooth jazz, combining jazz with elements of R&B, funk and pop music. They have received a string of Grammy nominations, going back as far as 1980 and continuing up to 2008.

The band’s line-up includes well-rounded musician Jay Beckenstein on saxophones
(who contributed his sax playing to progressive-metal band Dream Theater’s song “Another Day”), Tom Schuman on piano/keyboards, Julio Fernandez on guitars, Scott Ambush on bass and Bonny Bonaparte on drums/percussion.
