Sweet & Savory

by: Casey Pukl

After a long 40 days of Lent, Easter brings a day of celebration and feasting. Be sure to break your fast with our special Easter Sunday Brunch Live! The Anthology House Band Trio will be playing a special set of favorites up on the stage, there will be tons of goodies and a special menu for the kids, and Chef Todd Allison has two spectacularly decadent dishes for the adults to savor as you enjoy your bottomless mimosas and other signature libations!

Brioche French Toast with Golden Grahams Ice Cream

Tell me that doesn’t look and sound like a delicious retreat to your childhood! Don’t be fooled though— this dish still encompasses Chef Allison’s playful sophistication.

Three glorious slices of thick brioche are cooked to perfection and served alongside a scoop of Golden Grahams ice cream and oak barrel maple syrup. This isn’t the first time Chef Allison has gotten creative with his favorite childhood cereal, and we certainly hope it won’t be the last!

Rosemary and Garlic Roasted Leg of Lamb

My mouth is watering just thinking about this dish. You can look forward to a perfectly cooked leg of lamb served with baby brussel sprouts, carrots, fingerling potatoes, and topped with a natural jus. This dish is a classic that is sure to please (and feed) even the biggest of appetites.

Tickets are available now, so be sure to make your reservation soon, as this event will sell out! Tickets are only $5, and kids under 12 get in for free!

An Interview with Mike Doughty

by: Casey Pukl

Mike Doughty has had quite a colorful career to say the least. Starting off in the early 90’s with the alternative rock band he founded, Soul Coughing, Doughty broke up the band in 2000 over conflicts (which might be the understatement of the century). Doughty has long equated his experience in the group to that of an abusive relationship which was heavily fueled by drug use. After leaving the band, Doughty sought treatment for his drug addiction and started touring on his own.

Over the years, Doughty has developed his own following of fans and released several successful solo albums. His latest work, however, comes in the form of a memoir called The Book of Drugs, in which he recalls stories from his time in Soul Coughing and addicted to drugs. His latest tour merges his memoir and his music with a candid q&a session for a one-of-a-kind intimate experience. I had the chance to catch up with Mike Doughty last week and ask him a few questions of my own…

CP: You just released your memoir, “The Book of Drugs”, which really covers some intense ground with your previous band Soul Coughing and your drug addiction. What prompted you to do that?  Read the rest of this entry »

It All Started With A Little Boogie-Woogie

An Interview with Kyle Eastwood

by: Casey Pukl

Kyle Eastwood is not only an accomplished jazz bassist, but he’s also the composer behind some of Clint Eastwood’s latest movie soundtracks. Growing up, Eastwood was exposed to jazz early on, and annual trips to the Monterey Jazz Festival  with backstage visits were the norm. So it’s not surprising to see that over the years, Eastwood merged his passions for the bass and films to create quite a career. I had the chance to catch up with Kyle last week to find out what he has been up to as well as get a glimpse into his writing process. Read on to find out how he got his start in film scoring, and what’s on deck for 2012.

CP: Who inspired you to play bass when you were young?

KE: Actually, one of the very first things I learned on the piano was the bass part. My father started teaching me a little bit when I was about five or six, and the first thing he showed me was how to play the left hand parts, and I would play that while he would play the right hand part on boogie-woogie kinds of tunes. That was the first thing I learned to play. Then I studied the piano for a while, and I sort of picked up the bass and started teaching myself at first when I was in my mid-teens. But I was listening to my jazz idols, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Mingus, all that. But I was also listening to a lot of Motown music and a lot of electric bass players, funk bass players like Bootsy Collins. I’ve always listened to lots of different styles of music and tried to draw from all of it really. Read the rest of this entry »

Farm Fresh Pick of the Week: Cherimoya

Sweet Treats for Spring

by: Casey Pukl

I’ll be the first to admit that when choosing this week’s ingredient, I had absolutely no idea what a cherimoya was. All I knew as of Monday was that it was coming into season here in San Diego, and it was a fruit. I was even more intrigued when I asked Sous Chef Kristen Williams exactly what a cherimoya was, and she responded that it could be best described as a mixture between a pear and banana flavor with a hint more acidity.

The cherimoya is also referred to as the “custard apple” for its sherbet-like texture. When ripe, the skin on the cherimoya is a bright green color, and the fruit will be slightly soft (a la avocado). If you purchase your cherimoyas when they are still firm, leave them at room temperature to ripen, then transfer them to your refrigerator until you’re ready to use them. Most often, the fruit is eaten directly out of the skin with a spoon.

For this week’s farm fresh recipes, Sous Chef Kristen Williams and beverage manager Marc Canzoneri have created two delicious sweet cherimoya based treats for spring. Read the rest of this entry »

An Interview with God-Des & She

by: Casey Pukl

God-Des & She may be best known for their debut on Showtime’s hit series, “The L Word”, but these ladies have come a long way since then. Since their appearance on the show, they’ve gone on to sell more than 40,000 albums, tour the nation, headline Pride festivals throughout the county, and give a voice to LGBT kids in a country that is starting to ban the discussions that are key to saving their lives. These women are pretty remarkable, and they are using their incredible voices to advocate for causes that hit close to home. Read on to find out what you can look forward to on their upcoming album, and what they’re doing to stop bullying through music.  Read the rest of this entry »
