An Interview with Danny Bemrose of Scars on 45

by: Casey Pukl

It seems like just yesterday, Scars on 45 was playing the Anthology stage at Star 94.1’s Jingle Ball 2011. Fast forward only three short months, and these guys have headlined their first tour, opened for alternative rock powerhouse group, The Fray, and booked their first late night television appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno! Following yesterday’s announcement about their debut album release date, I had a chance to catch up with Danny Bemrose, the group’s lead singer and guitarist, about just what they’ve been up to since we saw them last!

CP: Danny! I’m so excited to catch up! I feel like it hasn’t been that long since we’ve seen you guys, but so much has happened in that time! Read the rest of this entry »

An Interview with Jonathan Karrant

by: Casey Pukl

Growing up in a home full of music, art, and dance, one might say that Jonathan Karrant was destined to be in show business. As a child, Jonathan sang in church, and as he entered his teens, he went into local theatre as well. He eventually found his way to Las Vegas, and finally landed in San Diego. He just released his debut album, On and On, and fortunately I got the chance to catch up with him and find out all about the record and his upcoming CD release show at Anthology! An Interview with Brian Culbertson

by: Casey Pukl

Don’t let the serious face in his press photo fool you— while Brian Culbertson is a serious master of all things jazz piano, he’s also a kind-hearted jokester with fantastic hair. With twelve records to his name (and lucky number 13 on the way), Culbertson is one of the most highly regarded contemporary jazz pianists of our generation. His last record, XII, featured performances by some of the biggest names in R&B including Faith Evans and Brian McKnight. Album after album, he continues to prove that he’s not only an incredible, innovative, talented, and forward thinking writer, producer, and player, but he’s also a passionate educator. Culbertson strives to reach out to young musicians and teach them through his own experiences in the music industry. I had the chance to catch up with him last week and get the scoop on his upcoming show at Anthology with David Benoit, as well as his upcoming album, the jazz festival he’s working on, and where he’s been teaching lately!

CP: Let’s get right into it— tell me about this Piano 2 Piano show you’re doing!

BC: Actually, that will literally be the first real show. We’ve done two warm up shows almost a year ago with just a few songs. So now we’re planning a full over an hour-long show of just piano duets— just David and I; no one else will be on stage! It’ll be just the two of us! I’m really excited because I’ve never done anything like this ever. Read the rest of this entry »

Simple Salads, Cocktails, & Wine Pairings

by: Casey Pukl

Strawberries have to be one of my all-time favorite fruits. These sweet little treats are not only delicious, but they’re also versatile and incredibly nutritious! From pies to jams to salads, strawberries go with just about anything! Strawberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamin c, but to get the most out of them, try to eat them within 2 days of purchasing them. Strawberries lose their nutrients very rapidly.

Today, Sous Chef Kristen Williams is going to teach us how to make one of her favorite spring time salads featuring strawberries! I know y’all are already drooling looking at the picture, so let’s dive right in!

An Interview with Albert Mazibuko of Ladysmith Black Mambazo

by: Casey Pukl

It’s pretty incredible to think about the history of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Not only do they have stunning musical accomplishments (16 Grammy nominations!) and a flawless catalog, but they also were the first group in South Africa to have permission to travel freely throughout the country.

This multi-generational vocal group is returning to Anthology after a year that included two new albums, endless collaborations, and another Grammy Award nomination. Read on to find out what’s on deck for 2012 and more!

CP: Congratulations on the Grammy nomination for “Songs From A Zulu Farm”!

AM: Thank you! We are just so happy about that. In December when I was home, I heard the news, and we were just over the moon. It’s so wonderful.

CP: That was what, your 16th nomination? Read the rest of this entry »
