All-Star Group to play at Anthology as part of Blue Note Records 70th Anniversary Tour
Sunday, January 25, 2009 19:26“The story of Blue Note Records is almost as quintessentially American as jazz itself. Founded in 1939 by German Jewish émigré Alfred Lion, who was soon joined by childhood friend Francis Wolff, Blue Note emerged in the years after World War II as the definitive modern jazz label, responsible for documenting such seminal masters as Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Art Blakey, Bobby Hutcherson and Wayne Shorter.
At a time when there’s not much to celebrate in the jazz business, the 70th anniversary of Blue Note’s founding and 25th anniversary of its rebirth has become the organizing principal behind numerous festivals and concert series.
Spearheading the yearlong labelpalooza is the Blue Note 7 tribute band that performs at Little Italy’s Anthology on Tuesday as part of a 50-city North American tour.”
