Shawn Colvin is playing two nights at Anthology (Oct. 14-15) and she admits that playing two nights at the same club sometimes presents some challenges to the set list.<\/p>\n \u201cI do like to switch things up,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m playing two nights there and while I know that not many people will come to both shows, but it will still feel like the same crowd. I think the shows will be 25 percent the same.\u201d<\/p>\n But she\u2019s quick to add: \u201cI do take requests.\u201d<\/p>\n Although it\u2019s highly likely that Colvin won\u2019t be allowed to leave the Anthology stage without playing her mid-90s Grammy-winning hit, \u201cWhen Sunny Came Home,\u201d she says that some fan requests do trip her up a little.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople will ask for a song that I sang exactly once, like there\u2019s a song I did for the \u2018Runaway Bride\u2019 soundtrack called \u2018Never Saw Blue,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cPeople want to hear that, but I sang it exactly once \u2013 in the recording studio.\u201d<\/p>\n But she\u2019s quick to add: \u201cI should learn it.\u201d<\/p>\n Colvin does her share of soundtrack songs and says she usually hears them for the first time in the studio. Not that that\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t require a lot of control,\u201d she said. \u201cI like spontaneity and even a little bit of pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n She\u2019s quick to add that her biggest hit came that way.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2019When Sunny Came Home\u2019 was written in a hurry because it was the last song I needed for a recording session, so it works,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Back to the requests portion of her show: Colvin says she\u2019s gotten all sorts of wacky suggestions, even the now clich\u00e9 request to \u201cplay \u2018Freebird\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n For the record, that\u2019s one request she\u2019s never complied with.<\/p>\n \u201cI never played that one, but I did try to play \u2018Smoke On The Water\u2019 once because that song was actually more popular in that era than \u2018Freebird.\u2019 I know that. I was in a lot of wedding bands during that era.\u201d<\/p>\n This is an interesting time in Colvin\u2019s life as she is currently working on her memoirs.<\/p>\n Although she is known as a very literary songwriter, she admits that long form writing took a bit of adjustment.<\/p>\n \u201cWriting this memoir requires a different set of muscles,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re a songwriter, you have to be a good editor. Every word has to count \u2013 even the most clich\u00e9d phrase like \u2018I love you.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cNow I\u2019m being asked to expand everything and add more detail.
