There are several excellent reasons why Bill Charlap ranks as one of the finest pianists in jazz, as benefits an instrumental wizard who has worked with everyone from Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett to such bop and post-bop luminaries as Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis, former San Diego trumpeter Brian Lynch and the late baritone sax icon Gerry Mulligan.<\/p>\n

But Charlap\u2019s return to San Diego this week takes on even greater significance because of the location of his performance. The 44-year-old pianist and his trio will take the stage Sunday night at downtown\u2019s all-ages Anthology.<\/p>\n

Not coincidentally, on June 6, 2007, he and his group had the distinction of playing at Anthology\u2019s grand opening \u2014 and a grand night of music it was.<\/p>\n

Few straight-ahead jazz pianists are as skilled and resourceful as Charlap, who combines wonderfully dazzling technical command and emotional fire with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, from Broadway show tunes and the Great American Songbook to jazz, classical, Latin and beyond. Better yet, he has the ability to deploy that knowledge in consistently fresh and rewarding ways.<\/p>\n

A master of touch and pinpoint dynamic control, Charlap is blessed with impeccable taste. This enables him to avoid overplaying, even when restlessly improvising through extremely intricate harmonic and rhythmic structures.<\/p>\n

For those with an appreciation for first-rate drumming, longtime Charlap trio member Kenny Washington is worth the price of admission on his own. So, for that matter, is the vast repertoire of the trio, which is now in its 13th year. (Bassist Peter Washington is on tour abroad with Charlap’s wife, noted jazz pianist — and former James Moody band member — Renee Rosnes, a major influence on Diana Krall. He will be replaced for Charlap’s current tour by Sean Smith.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a couple of hundred songs, which is one of the pleasures of playing together,\u201d Charlap told me last week. On Sunday, you can experience those pleasures for yourself.<\/p>\n
