TOOTS THIELEMANS, LIVING JAZZ LEGEND, COMING TO ANTHOLOGY NOV. 8 & 9
Saturday, November 1, 2008 9:54‘GREATEST JAZZ HARMONICA PLAYER OF THE CENTURY’
SAN DIEGO, CALIF., Oct. 23 – Jazz great Toots Thielemans—is coming to Anthology on Sat Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. & Sun. Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Thielemans will perform with the Kenny Werner Trio, which also includes Kenny Werner on piano/synthesizer and Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar.
If you’ve ever watched “Sesame Street” or heard “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”—you’ve heard Toots Thielemans’ harmonica artistry. A seasoned jazz guitarist also known for his accomplished professional whistling, Thielemans is often credited by jazz critics and aficionados as being the greatest jazz harmonica player of the past century.
Born in Brussels in 1922, Thielemans got his start as a guitar player and had the good fortune to join a jam session in Paris with luminaries Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, Sidney Bechert and others in 1949. Three years later, he moved to the U.S. to join Charlie Parker’s All-Stars. He’s played and recorded with Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Quincy Jones and a roster of other musical heavyweights.
“Bluesette”—a song in which Thielemans played guitar and whistled in unison, released in 1962—was a worldwide hit. In addition to setting the aural scene for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” with his plaintive harmonica playing, Thieleman can be heard on scores for movies such as “Midnight Cowboy,” “Baghdad CafÈ” and “French Kiss,” and in Billy Joel’s “Leave a Tender Moment Alone.”
Thielemans continues to perform and record—his 1998 album, “Chez Toots,” featuring Johnny Mathis, is a perennial high-seller.
In October, Thielemans was honored with the 2009 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship.
